A conceptual framework to evaluate human-wildlife interactions within coupled human and natural systems Ecology and Society
Morzillo, Anita T.; University of Connecticut; anita.morzillo@uconn.edu; de Beurs, Kirsten M.; University of Oklahoma; kdebeurs@ou.edu; Martin-Mikle, Chelsea J.; University of Oklahoma; chelseajane.martin@gmail.com.
Landscape characteristics affect human-wildlife interactions. However, there is a need to better understand mechanisms that drive those interactions, particularly feedbacks that exist between wildlife-related impacts, human reaction to and behavior as a result of those impacts, and how land use and landscape characteristics may influence those components within coupled human and natural systems. Current conceptual models of human-wildlife interactions often focus on species population size as the independent variable driving those interactions. Such an approach potentially overlooks important feedbacks among and drivers of human-wildlife interactions that result from mere wildlife presence versus absence. We describe an emerging conceptual framework...

A EVOLUÇÃO DA INDÚSTRIA DE AGROTÓXICOS NO BRASIL DE 2001 A 2007: A EXPANSÃO DA AGRICULTURA E AS MODIFICAÇÕES NA LEI DE AGROTÓXICOS AgEcon
Terra, Fabio Henrique Bittes; Pelaez, Victor Manoel.

Acetylcholinesterase activity in copepods (Tigriopus brevicornis) from the Vilaine River estuary, France, as a biomarker of neurotoxic contaminants ArchiMer
Forget, Joelle; Beliaeff, Benoit; Bocquene, Gilles.
From April 1997 to June 1998, 14 measurements of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzymatic activity were performed with the copepod, Tigriopus brevicornis, collected at five stations in the Vilaine River estuary (South Brittany, France). Simultaneously, four chemical analyses of triazines and one analysis of total pesticides in water were undertaken. AChE activity levels in T brevicornis were compared to the levels measured at a reference site not exposed to effluents from Vilaine River. Results reveal significant differences between AChE activity levels depending on location of stations in the plume of the river with an increasing gradient of activity from the upstream to the downstream stations, thus indicating that neurotoxic contaminants are mainly brought...

Assessing Investment in Precision Farming for Reducing Pesticide Use in French Viticulture AgEcon
Lescot, Jean-Marie; Rousset, Sylvain; Souville, Genevieve.
The paper develops a mathematical programming model for assessing the impact of Environmental Policy instruments on French winegrowing farm’s adoption of pesticides-saving technologies. We model choices with regards to investment in precision farming and plant protection practices, in a multi-periodic framework with sequential decision, integrating uncertainty on fungal disease pressure and imperfect information on equipment performance. We focus on recursive models maximizing a Utility function. These models are applied on a representative sample of 534 winegrowers from the French Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN). As expected, both ecotaxes and green subsidies make precision farming equipment more profitable, but the investment rate remains however...

BIOLOGICAL ASPECTS INVOLVED IN THE DEGRADATION OF ORGANIC POLLUTANTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Diez,M.C.
Worldwide use of pesticide has increased dramatically during the last two decades. As a consequence, pesticide residues and their transformation products are frequently found in groundwater and surface waters. This review summarizes information about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), some chlorophenols; it mainly empathizes on pesticides, their incorporation into the environment, microorganisms involved in their degradation and, some physico-chemical aspects of pesticides behavior in soils. Details about residues of pesticides in groundwater and superficial water found in some foreign countries and in Chile are reported, as well. The fungal degradation of organic pollutants (xenobiotics) is considered as an...

BLADE ANGLE EFFECT ON DROPLET SIZE SPECTRUM OF ROTARY ATOMIZERS USED IN BRAZIL REA
Carvalho,Fernando K.; Antuniassi,Ulisses R.; Chechetto,Rodolfo G.; Mota,Alisson A. B.; Kruger,Greg R..
ABSTRACT The effect of blade angle on droplet size spectrum of five rotary cage atomizers and one rotary disc atomizer used in Brazil was evaluated in a high speed wind tunnel, with an air speed of 180 km h−1. This study included the characterization of the droplet size spectrum, via laser diffraction instrument, generated by three blades angles, of 45, 60 and 75 degrees. The spray solution was composed of Picoxystrobin+ Cyproconazole fungicide (SC), at 20 mL c.p. L−1, and at a flow rate of 6 L min−1. As the angle decreased from 75 to 45 degrees, the rotational speed of the atomizers increased and the volume median diameter (VMD) decreased. However, increasing the rotational speed also increased the percentage of droplets smaller than 100 µm (% < 100...

Can pesticides, copper and seasonal water temperature explain the seagrass Zostera noltei decline in the Arcachon bay? ArchiMer
Gamain, Perrine; Feurtet-mazel, Agnes; Maury-brachet, Regine; Auby, Isabelle; Pierron, Fabien; Belles, Angel; Budzinski, Helene; Daffe, Guillemine; Gonzalez, Patrice.
Dwarf eelgrasses (Zostera noltei) populations have decreased since 2005 in Arcachon Bay (southwest France). Various stressors have been pointed out, however the role of xenobiotics like pesticides or copper (Cu) and of parameters like water temperature warming have not yet been explored. To determine their impact, Z. noltei individuals were collected in a pollution-free site and transferred to the laboratory in seawater microcosms. This dwarf eelgrass was exposed to a pesticide cocktail and copper, alone or simultaneously, at temperatures (10 °C, 20 °C, 28 °C) representative of different seasons. After a two-week contamination, leaf growth, leaf bioaccumulation of Cu, and differential expression of target genes were studied. Eelgrasses bioaccumulated Cu...

This paper introduces the field of mixture toxicity and the challenges in regulating pesticide mixtures. Even though pesticides are unique chemical stressors designed to have biological activity that can affect a number of nontarget species, they are intentionally placed into the environment in large quantities. Currently, methods and terminology for evaluating mixture toxicity are poorly established. The most common approach used is the assumption of additive concentration, with the concentrations adjusted for potency to a reference toxicant. Using this approach, the joint action of pesticides that have similar chemical structures and modes of toxic action can be predicted. However, this approach and other modeling techniques often provide little insight...
